CHAPTER 11

It’s a good thing I’d brought a change of clothes—I still smelled like a porta-potty.

My eyes stung, nose dripping, as I yanked open our busted, automatic garage door high enough to slip beneath. I tugged on my comfy clothes—an old, loose sweatshirt and knee-length basketball shorts—and threw my ruined set into the trash and made a mental note to set them on fire later. Eliminate the evidence.

I hung the bolt cutters back in their proper place on Dad’s tool wall. As I dug through my bag for his flashlight, my fingers brushed against something warm. I’d almost forgotten about the little rodent sleeping at the bottom of my bag, scaled tail curled around himself. His soft snores made the webs between his toes wobble.

I can’t believe I brought home a mutant. If my life wasn’t already a dumpster fire of unbelievable circumstances.

The rat’s eyes opened and stared up at me, unafraid. After a quick sniff of my hand, he climbed up and perched on my shoulder. I reached up and scratched his fur. Such rich browns, like you’d expect from Thanksgiving dinner. “I’m going to call you Gravy.”

Gravy whiffled his whiskers in my ear. I took that for approval.

Dad’s voice called from the inside of the house. “Noah, that you?”

Sweet and sour sauce. I tugged Gravy off my shoulder and shoved him in my hood, shielding him in the folds of the fabric. “Don’t move and stay quiet,” I murmured.

Gravy let out a small squeak then fell silent. Good rat.

I slicked back my sticky hair as I hurried from the garage into the kitchen. Dad sat at the table, a spoonful of cereal halfway to his mouth. I glanced at the clock. 9:15. He’d slept in for once. Maybe he hadn’t realized I was gone.

Dad looked me over, eyes narrowing. “Who were you talking to? Why were you in the garage?”

“Uh.” I slid my hand over my pocket, fingers tracing over the edge of my phone. “Just talking to Suki.”

“And the garage?”

“I—working out.”

“Since when do you work out?”

Gravy shuffled, and I tugged at my hood. “Since, you know, I’ve been working. I realized how out of shape I am. Got to build those muscles, you know?”

“You’re young. You have no idea what out of shape means.” Dad’s lips twisted into an amused smile. “But don’t you mean trying to look good for Ruth?”

My stomach dropped, along with my jaw.

Dad burst out laughing, spilling milk on the table. “Your sisters told me she picked you up yesterday. A date? Good for you. She seems like a nice girl.”

Traitors. I can’t believe they told on me. Despite my irritation, I smiled. “We just had breakfast with her friends, that’s all.”

Dad wiped off the table with his sleeve before scooping more cereal into his mouth, pointing his spoon at me. “Vanessa liked you, by the way.”

“Yeah?” More wiggling from Gravy. I tugged at my hood, trying to control my breathing.

“Yeah.” Dad winked. “Said you were clever, sharp. Of course, I knew that. Can’t wait for you to realize it, too.
